Wandesford Quay,
Intergenerational Centre
The building is located on Wandesford Quay, Cork city centre. The design intent of Wandesford quay is an Intergenerational centre. This centre will re-unite all age groups in one area. This is done by creating activities within the building which allows the young and old people to engage and spend time together. The location and urban context of this building allows an easy approach to this design. The large open green field and the proposed walkthrough the building will bring the community members to the centre. Through the right design approach, this intergenerational space can provide a good social connection between all generations.
The initial concept came from the history of the building materials. I was inspired by the cracks on the exterior facade of the building. I made analysis on site and came across coins on the exterior facade. I took images and sketched over these details. I created a tension model and made a study of negative and positive space. From this study, I moved on and montaged materials using photsohop. This study created panels in my design. From research of precedent works, I looked at different ways of introducing these panels into my design. I then created segmented model and focused on particular details and illustrated how they become a visual language. I enlarged these panels and used them as balustrades, staircases and leaning walls. The interior panels penetrated to exterior to form a function outside such as flower beds or bench seating. The material of this large panels are perforated timber to create open and wide space.
